Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi

The Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi is one of the Wilayats of North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. It is bordered to the north by the Wilayats of Bidbid, Samail, Ibra and Al Qabil; to the south by the Wilayat of Mahout; to the east by three Wilayats: Bidiyah, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan and Jaalan Bani Bu Ali; and to the west by the Wilayats of Izki and Adam. The Wilayat has adopted the gazelle as its emblem. It has about 262 population centres, including Al Mudhaibi, Samad Al Shan, Khadra Bani Dafaa and Al Rawdah. The landscape of the Wilayat varies between mountains, desert, oases, caves, wadis and springs. Its mountains include the Al Rawdah mountains and Jabal Madrah, which has several caves; its wadis include Wadi Samad, Wadi Al Rak, Wadi Kharma and Wadi Atkah; and its springs include Ain Al Hurayd. The people of the Wilayat rely on aflaj for irrigation, with about 156 aflaj in the Wilayat. Various kinds of wild trees grow there, such as sidr and ghaf, and some wild animals, such as gazelles, are found there. The Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi has archaeological sites such as the Al Maysar site and the Wadi Andam site, where settlements dating back to the third millennium BC were found along the gravel terraces on the banks of Wadi Andam. Tombs dating back to the late Iron Age were also found in the village of Mahliya. Historical landmarks in Al Mudhaibi include Al Rawdah Fort in the town of Al Rawdah; Khazam Fort, located in the Niyabat of Samad Al Shan on a small hill on the western bank of Wadi Samad and surrounded by palm trees on several sides; and Bait Al Khubayb Fort, built on a mountain in Harat Al Khubayb. The people of the Wilayat practise a number of economic activities and crafts, such as agriculture, the making of farming tools and palm-frond products, and the making of Omani halwa. The traditional arts performed there include Al Razha, Al Azi, Al Hambal and Al Muharib.

  • Al Jawabir Castle

    Al Jawabir Castle

    Al Jawabir Castle in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, is one of the Wilayat's prominent historical landmarks. It stands in the old eastern residential quarter and overlooks Al Musaylah Souq. Restoration has given the castle back its grandeur and protected it from the deterioration that had become evident in many of its corners.

    Al Rawdah Castle

    The castle stands on a mountain top in the town of Al Rawdah in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi. It was built by Salim bin Imran bin Aziz Al Jabri during the reign of Imam Sultan bin Saif bin Malik Al Yarubi. The castle has three storeys containing a number of rooms, and two towers that were used for observation and guarding.
