Wilayat of Ibra

The Wilayat of Ibra is one of the Wilayats of North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. It is bordered to the north and east by the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi, to the south by the Wilayat of Al Qabil and to the east by the Wilayat of Dima Wa Al Taiyyin. It lies about 180 km from the capital, Muscat, and is the administrative centre of North Al Sharqiyah. The Wilayat has adopted Al Aqaba Mosque as its emblem. It has about 65 population centres, including Ibra, Al Nasib, Al Thabiti and Al Yahmadi. The land of the Wilayat is covered by ophiolite rocks and sedimentary rocks containing various minerals, and its landscape varies between desert, mountains, sand dunes, wadis and springs. Its mountains include Jabal Al Nasiri; its wadis include Wadi Al Batha, Wadi Nam, which contains large quantities of laterite soil, and Wadi Ibra, where a number of wadis converge: Wadi Qufayfah, Wadi Al Mazrou, Wadi Al Malih and Wadi Wurayd; and its springs include Ain Abu Salih, Ain Al Dhabyan, Ain Shubayhat, Ain Al Malih and Ain Al Khubb. The Wilayat also has caves, such as Jurf Rujayb Cave and Al Khayban Cave. Ibra has many mountain and wild plants, such as sidr, samr, ghaf, qarat, suqam, arsh, ja'dah, shuka', dhafrah and saql. It is known for certain varieties of date palm, such as the Ras Al Dhaydhu palm. Its wild animals include hares and gazelles, and its birds include the sandgrouse. Ibra has many historical sites, such as Al Dhahir Castle; the forts of Al Shubbak, Furayfir, Al Daghshah, Al Ain and Al Qurayn; the towers of Al Qutbi, Al Nasiri, Sanaa, Al Mansour, Al Qalaa, Al Natalah, Al Safh and Al Quroun; the walls of Harat Al Manzafah, Harat Al Qanatir, Al Alayah, Sohar and Al Sayyah; and Bait Al Mujaddarah, Bait Al Yahmadi and Bait Al Qasimi. Its archaeological sites include Harat Al Manzafah, which contains old buildings, inscriptions and decorations, and the Al Jubaylah site, where circular tombs and ancient copper-extraction sites were found. Archaeological sites dating back to the third millennium BC have also been discovered in its wadis, such as Wadi Ibra, Wadi Al Batha and Wadi Al Athli. The Wilayat also has old souqs that have since disappeared, including the Souq of Imam Azzan bin Qais (reigned 1285-1287 AH/1868-1871 AD), the Souq of Harat Al Qanatir and Souq Al Yahmadi. It is also famous for the Wednesday Souq, a weekly market exclusively for women. Among its best-known historic mosques is the Mosque of Imam Azzan bin Tamim (reigned 277-280 AH/890-893 AD). The people of the Wilayat of Ibra engage in economic activities such as agriculture, trade, blacksmithing, carpentry and herding, in addition to traditional crafts such as weaving, palm-frond crafts and leatherwork; silverwork such as khanjars (traditional daggers) and jewellery; the making of building tools; metalwork; and sugar-cane processing. The traditional performing arts practised by its people include Al Razha, Al Azi, Al Hambal, Al Qasafiyah, Al Tashah Shah, Al Taghrud, Al Tariq, Al Wannah, Al Maidan, Al Zar and Al Hadi. Its farmers rely on aflaj to irrigate their crops; there are about 54 aflaj in the Wilayat, 31 of which are still flowing.
